Curriculum Statement

At Homefields, we base teaching and learning of mathematics on the “Chris Quigley Essentials” curriculum to enable children to develop a DEPTH of learning. This curriculum is brought to life through careful planning and sequencing through the use of the White Rose schemes of learning in Key Stage 1 and 2, and through the updated Development Matters scheme in EYFS to work towards the Early Learning Goals.

In our school, mathematics is an interrelated and engaging subject in which pupils are taught to move fluently between representations of mathematical ideas: an essential tool for everyday life.

Mathematics teaches children how to make sense of the world around them through developing the ability to calculate, to reason and to solve problems in an engaging and interactive way. It enables them to understand and appreciate relationships and patterns in both number and space in their everyday lives.

Our vision for mathematics at Homefields is to enable pupils to:

  • Have an understanding of the important concepts and an ability to make connections within mathematics.
  • Posses a broad range of skills in using and applying mathematics.
  • Have fluent knowledge and recall of number facts and the number system.
  • Develop the ability to show initiative in solving problems in a wide range of contexts, including the new or unusual.
  • Develop the ability to think independently and to persevere when faced with challenges, showing confidence in success.
  • Have the ability to embrace the value of learning from mistakes and false starts.
  • Have the ability to reason, generalise and make sense of solutions.
  • Be fluent in performing written and mental calculations and mathematical techniques.
  • Confidently use a wide range of mathematical vocabulary.
  • Show a commitment to and passion for the subject.

Calculation Methods for Years 5 and 6

The two presentations below provide guidance, explanations and examples of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division calculation methods taught at Homefields for Years 5 and 6. Each presentation is in both PowerPoint and PDF formats.

Mathematical Vocabulary

For children to accurately communicate their mathematical thinking and reasoning, they need the right words. This link will take you to a really useful interactive online 'Maths Dictionary' which offers clear diefinitions:

Homefields Are Crowned Maths Masters Champions 2022!

The Homefields Maths Masters team reigned victorious through an amazing team effort against teams from Awsworth Primary, Mornington Primary, Kimberley Primary and Gilthill Primary. Each team consisted of two boys and two girls with one representative from each of years 3, 4, 5 and 6. A combination of individual and team rounds, plus problem solving and quick-fire questions, tested the mathematical skills and talents of each team. Fantastic learning behaviour was demonstrated by all teams with a really pleasing level of respect. Well done Homefields!
